Bengaluru builds the satellites, writes the code, and trains the engineers behind some of the world's most advanced astronomical instruments. Step outside on a clear night in the city itself, though, and most of the sky those instruments study is simply gone โ€” washed out by the city's own light.

A dome of light over the city

Astronomers describe it as a light-pollution dome: a glow of scattered artificial light that sits over the city and drowns out all but the brightest stars. From within Bengaluru, the Milky Way is at best faintly visible on a clear, moonless night, and only if you're looking toward the darker edges of the sky. For most residents, it isn't visible at all โ€” not because it isn't there, but because streetlights, vehicle headlights, illuminated signage, and glass-fronted buildings scatter enough light upward to overwhelm it.

How far you now have to travel

A generation ago, a clear night from most Bengaluru neighborhoods would have shown a genuinely dark sky. Today, serious stargazing means leaving the city. Savandurga Hills, roughly 67 kilometres out and ringed by forest, is one of the nearest spots with meaningfully low light pollution. Ramanagara, about 50 kilometres away, offers similar relief. The closest dedicated dark-sky observatory sits even further, past Hosur and Krishnagiri โ€” a deliberate drive, not a walk to the terrace.

Not just an inconvenience for stargazers

Skyglow isn't only a loss for hobbyist astronomers. Excess artificial light disrupts the circadian rhythms of nocturnal wildlife, confuses migratory birds that navigate by starlight, and has been linked to disrupted sleep patterns in humans living under it. It's also simply wasted energy โ€” light pollution is, definitionally, light that isn't doing the job it was installed for, scattered upward instead of illuminating the street or building it was meant for.

A problem with a genuinely simple fix

Unlike most environmental damage, light pollution doesn't accumulate โ€” it can be reversed almost immediately. Research on urban skyglow has found that shifting to properly shielded, downward-facing fixtures and addressing air pollution (particulate matter in the air scatters light and amplifies skyglow) can measurably reduce night-sky brightness within a single city. Bengaluru doesn't need new technology to dim its own glow โ€” it needs the fixtures it already has pointed the right way.

Why this matters to us

We work at the intersection of technology and sustainability, and Bengaluru's vanishing night sky is a reminder that not every environmental cost of a growing city is visible in the usual places โ€” some of it is written across the sky itself, in what's no longer there to see. It's a quieter loss than a drained lake or a polluted river, but it's just as real, and far cheaper to fix.
