Bengaluru writes the software that runs half the world's phones, banks, and back offices. What it hasn't figured out is what happens to those phones once they die โ and the answer runs through a hidden, largely unregulated trail that most residents never see.
A tech capital that leads in trash, too
According to figures reported from Karnataka Pollution Control Board data, Bengaluru ranks third among Indian cities in e-waste generation, contributing an estimated 10% of the country's total โ roughly 2 lakh tonnes a year. IT companies alone are estimated to generate around a thousand tonnes of e-waste every month in the city. For a place that prides itself on being India's technology capital, it is also, by volume, one of its biggest sources of discarded technology.
Where 90% of it actually goes
The official recycling system exists โ authorized dismantlers, certified recyclers, formal collection centers. But by most estimates, the formal sector handles only 10โ15% of what the city throws away. The rest, roughly 90%, moves through an informal economy: aggregators, scrap dealers, and small backroom operations that manually strip circuit boards, burn cables to recover copper, and use acid baths to leach gold and other precious metals out of chips โ often with no protective equipment, no fume extraction, and no safe disposal for the toxic residue left behind.
It's not hidden because anyone is trying to hide it. It's hidden because most of us never ask where the old laptop went after it left our hands.
A livelihood as much as a hazard
It would be easy to frame this purely as a crisis, but that misses half the picture. Nationally, the informal e-waste sector is estimated to support the livelihoods of well over a million people โ many of whom have built years of expertise in extracting value from what the formal economy considers garbage. The problem isn't that this work exists. It's that it happens without the safety standards, wages, or health protections that make it sustainable for the people doing it.
The average smartphone is retired after two or three years. Almost nobody using it ever sees where it goes next.
What responsible disposal actually looks like
Formal e-waste management isn't complicated โ it's just underused. Karnataka has authorized collection centers and certified recyclers that follow Central Pollution Control Board guidelines, extracting value safely and disposing of hazardous residue properly. Many IT companies and gadget manufacturers also run their own take-back or buy-back programs. The gap isn't technology or policy โ it's awareness, convenience, and habit. A single old phone routed to a certified recycler instead of a kabadiwala is a small decision with an outsized difference downstream.

Building good technology has to include a plan for what happens when that technology reaches the end of its life โ not as an afterthought, but as part of the design.
